Emulate Musiri sanitation model: expert

TIRUCHI: The need for scaling up of sustainable sanitation model to all parts of the country was stressed by Prakash Kumar, SEI-UNICEF Ecosan Consultant, New Delhi.

Excellent beginning:
Delivering the key note address at the three-day national level training programme for officials of Water Supply and Sanitation Departments here on Monday, he said excellent beginning has been made in the south, especially at Musiri in Tamil Nadu, which should be extended to other parts of the country without delay.

Key to success:
In his inaugural address, Panneerselvam, Executive Engineer, TWAD Board, said community participation was the key to the success of any programme in which behavioural and cultural barriers had to be overcome.

A. Kalimuthu, Technical Adviser, Plan India, said that 120 representatives from 20 states in the country would undergo the training in four batches (16th to24th) including field visits to Musiri.

M. Subburaman, Director, SCOPE, explained the holistic and integrated Ecosan approach for management of human waste in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. The programme was organised by the Department of Drinking Water Supply, Government of India, jointly with Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Institute, Kodaikanal with coordination by Plan India and SCOPE, Tiruchi.
